The "drawing" product for silk

In order to be able to outline items or draw on your silk, you need to use a product called Gutta, which is pronounced as goo-tah. There are 2 types - solvent-based (the original gutta used for centuries) and the new water-based (friendlier to the environment).

Many silk artists prefer the solvent-based, but it is up to you which one you prefer, so try them both and see what you think. The gutta must be removed after steaming the silk, and the solvent-based one ideally should be dry-cleaned. We'll cover more of this soon, and if you have any tips, suggestions, disasters to share ... let us know! We can all benefit from others' experiences.

Go to your kitchen ...

There are many gutta applicator bottles on the market, and you can find them in all kinds of places online.

The best alternative gutta applicator I've heard of is to use cake decorating nozzles and squeezebags - which, if you think about it, makes a lot of sense!

So if you're experimenting with gutta, why not go to the cake decorating section of the supermarket or your local discount store and find inexpensive kits? Then you can pour in some gutta, try different nozzles and see what happens!

Remember though if you want really tiny fine lines, you'll need a nozzle of that size. Some of the larger cake decorating nozzles won't be any good to you because too much gutta will come out on the silk which (a) takes a lot longer to dry and (b) will be extremely hard to remove after steaming.

Let me know how you go!
