Sandra Kay Johnson Silk Painting & Mounting Process

This is a technique of covering silk paintings with a coating of acrylic matte varnish or meduim.

Sounds fascinating, right? First the silk is placed on a canvas then the varnish goes on top of that.

For complete details, you can purchase her book or go to www.sandrakayjohnson.com

In simple terms, Sandra uses acryllic matt medium to adhere/stick silk to canvas, and then covers with a gloss/matt varnish to seal.

An artist I know has tried the following:
  • use a gessoed pre-stretched canvas big enough for your silk painting
  • tint/paint the edges and border to match the colour of the edges of the silk painting (which is of course slightly smaller than the size of the canvas)
  • Sandra's paintings have "white" space, she uses Nova acrylic medium around her handpainted silk flowers which give a very dramatic result on the natural ungessoed canvas.
