March ...

This month I had the delightful experience of meeting one of Australia's foremost textile designers:

Linda Jackson
Fashion Designer, Textile Designer, Fashion Retailer, Interior Designer and Visual Artist

What an incredible resume Linda has - I've known of her for many years, and imagine my surprise when I discovered she lives quite close to me. Since meeting at an arts seminar, I've run into her several times - I LOVE her textiles! Check out the photos at right ==>

Cheers, Teena!

Watercolors blossom
with color and depth

Santa Maria silk artist Jill Targer
Lompoc Record - Lompoc, California, USA
She learned the art of silk painting from artist Sandra Kay Johnson. ""For me," said Santa Maria artist Jill Targer, "art is probably more about feelings and colors than it is about accurately imitating something."

It is this philosophy, Targer said, that allows her to create her art - watercolors and silk paintings that blossom with color and depth, some of which will be displayed throughout January at the Lompoc Public Library's Grossman Gallery, 501 E. North Ave. " Read more ...

Laminating Silk

I recently read about a laminating system called Xyron. It is a hand-cranked laminating machine which puts a sticky backing on anything you put through the machine. It is used for paper - maybe it could work on silk? Have a look at www.wilde-ideas.com. No toxic spraying. Also look at EZ Laminator - easiest way is to type "laminator" in the Search Box on any page.

Empowering Artists

I came across this site and thought it might be of interest to someone:

Books on a budget!!

Just how many books can a girl have??? If they're art books, never too many!!! Check out http://www.fetchbook.info for a price comparison on the book you're looking for. You'll get prices on both new and used, and hardcover and softcover editions of the book. Sometimes a new book will be cheaper than a used one. Someone on one of the lists I'm one looked up Philip Ball's Bright Earth: Art and the Invention of Color, and found a new, hardcover copy (remaindered) for $6.99 at http://www.bookcloseouts.com ; The exact link for the book is http://www.bookcloseouts.com/default.asp?R=0374116792B

Follow the amazing processes and marvel at the limited but effective resources - think about your own painting space or art room, and count your blessings.

There are THREE pages of mini photos - you can also see them all as a slideshow. How wonderful!

Artist of the Month
Linda Jackson

Linda worked on silk during her many years of textile design, and is now well-known for her distinctive patterns on textiles.

From the Cyber Fibres website: Jackson studied fashion, design and photography in Melbourne and then travelled extensively in 1966-1968 throughout Asia and Europe. Jackson met designer Jenny Kee in 1972. With Jenny Kee established Flamingo Park, boutique in The Strand Arcade, Sydney in 1973.

Jackson opened a large studio space in Bondi Junction, Sydney from 1982-1991 and created a new label Bush Couture, as well as the Bush Kids label. During the past three decades of the twentieth century, Jackson has travelled extensively throughout outback Australia, living and working with several Aboriginal communities. Throughout the 1990s, Jackson has undertaken exclusive interior and furnishing design commisions in Australia. Other commissions involve costuming and designs for the professional theatre. Jackson has exhibited as a painter and photographer in both public and commercial Australian galleries.

Jackson synthesises couture glamour, nationalist imagery, environmental awareness and Australian inspired design in fashion and textiles.

"The 1980s saw the emergence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander textiles influencing non-indigenous designers." More ...

Linda teaches a SHIBORI class locally, and I'm going to sign up - what an adventure! And how exciting to be learning from such a well-reknowned textile designer - I'll keep you posted! It starts in May, so there'll be PHOTOS!

Do an internet search for "linda jackson" textile, and read tons of fascinating articles about Linda's start in textiles and the direction she's heading in now.
