Got a tip? Email me and I'll put it online with a credit to you.

Welcome to the new members this month - I hope you enjoy your time with us! Don't be shy - write in, share a tidbit or question and I'll pop it on the website.

Is it just me or is time zooming by at the rate of an asteroid? How can it possibly be September already? Wasn't it just Easter???

When we're young we feel invincible and our whole world is in front of us ... so at which point do we feel time slipping by so quickly? Is it purely an *age* thing?

I never feel like there are enough hours in the day to do all the things I want - is it the same for you? Drop me a note and let me know.

One of members, Michelle, always drops me a line after each newsletter - I like that! I'd love it if some other members would write in ... [hint hint].

I had a wonderful experience this month - I met the COLOURFUL vibrant Fashion Fantasia inventor and all-round arty-farty person, Rossy Roberts-Thomson, Director - Australia's Fashion Fantasia. I've got photos to show you below.

As you know I've moved into an apartment in Sydney and left my Studio in storage for a few more months. This has stretched my inventiveness - trying to paint on large metres of fabric in a small apartment is a challenge to behold, haha. At least I didn't get paint on the carpet, but my back sure did get punished from not having a work bench at the right height. I used the dining room table, as my back reminded me over the next few days, haha.

Despite the [temporary] pain and discomfort [my fault for not making sure I was comfortable], the results are always a joy and a delight :: handpainted silk and cotton clothing, and the pain is quickly forgotten ... one friend commented it sounded like childbirth, haha.

And so, let's get on to a month of creativity - what do you have planned for the upcoming weeks?

Keep me posted, and above all - enjoy yourselves!

I recently had the great pleasure to meet Rossy Roberts-Thomson, the Founder and Director of Australia's Fashion Fantasia 2005 event, which is held in November in Tasmania, and is always an incredible feast for the senses.

I emailed Rossy when I received a newsletter about the event, and to my delight she replied immediately to say she'd be flying into Sydney on her way to New Zealand, from her hometown in Tasmania [the island off the south coast of Australia - we call it the Apple Isle].

Rossy and TeenaRossy was just as colourful in real life as she appeared to be on the website, with mostly blue and purple dyed hair, and a fab blue outfit for her journey [photo: Rossy on the left, that's me on the right wearing one of my handpainted cotton shirts]. Her husband was also a delight, and I met them at the airport and took them on an adventure to find a local cafe away from the hustle and bustle, before their next flight.

We spent a great couple of hours talking textile design and fashion and fabrics, and I was ever so pleased to have been able to meet them both.

If you've got time, check out the website to read more about the amazing event which Rossy dreamed up and put into place, which is now the most prestigious textile fashion show for textile and surface design artists in the southern hemisphere.

Check out the latest information and new additions like Merchandise and Winning Designers of previous years, and read about the new Judges for '05.

AustralianSilkworm.com membership Landscape imagery often forms the starting point for poetic paintings characterized by vivid use of color and a magical atmosphere. Her choice of materials is truly engaging. In a search for a more expressive and vibrant medium she discovered French-manufactured dyes which, when applied to fine Chinese silks, produce hues of brilliant luminosity. This medium perfectly suits her love of color and expressive gesture, and the resulting images dance and shimmer in the light.

Best known for her large-scale paintings on silk, she also works in watercolor and lithography. Her work has been exhibited and collected across the U.S. and overseas, and is featured in the book The Best of Silkpainting (North Light Press, 1997).

I find Sharon's work to be bold and beautiful, wonderful mastery of silk painting in large format - let me know what you think of her style and techniques.

I have this book amongst my collection, and I was thrilled to receive it autographed by Diane Tuckman, and to actually meet her and Jan Janas in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2004 - what a lucky girl I am!

© Sue Zurcher Sue Zurcher has studied art and nature throughout her life. Her silk painting is inspired from her life on the California coast. The colors and forms in concert with nature have all stirred her interpretations on silk.

She began textile arts in 1989 while attending a batik workshop in Micronesia. Her work now focuses on the dynamic art of silk painting, utilizing both the French serti technique and abstract silk dying techniques.

Her joy of silk painting also comes from delivering this functional art form to enter our daily lives; to see, to touch, and to feel.

I had the opportunity to meet Sue in person last year in Los Angeles, what a delighful woman, bubbly personality and beautiful silk. Sue has just created a new website, and I'm sure she'd love to hear from you if you'd like to contact her via her website :: BeachSaltDesign.com

News from around the World

I gather info on articles which appear anywhere online - sometimes I check them all out, sometimes I don't have time to. You will find the word *silk* in each of them, sometimes *silk painting* sometimes *handpainted silk*. Sometimes the article might not have anything to do with silk painting, but it might be interesting anyway - be adventurous!

Some newspaper sites ask you to become a member - for free - in order to read their articles. The choice is yours. To find the word SILK in each webpage you go to, select EDIT / FIND from your top browser menu.
