Aaaaahhhh ... October! Hi to the new members - we're all arty types, and we love to hear from you all - drop me a line and let me know what you're working on, if you have photos, send them in! I'd be happy to showcase them [and your website] on this page.Well in September I talked about the speed of time ... and suddenly we have about 8 weeks till Christmas. YIKES!!!! What are you creating for the festive season? Gifts? Home decor, tablecloths, napkins or serviettes?? How about silken Christmas stockings? One of my fave silken gifts is handpainted cushion covers or pillow cases - so far each friend I've surprised with these as gifts has been thrilled. You can buy the cushion covers ready-made with the side seams open [Arty's brand - available from selected suppliers], or you could easily make up your own. If you'd like to download an Instruction Sheet on Silk Pillow Making I created, please click on the icon. Sewing a cushion cover To download the instructions: Mac users: click on icon or link, hold mouse down, select *Save Link Target As* [or words to that effect] and choose location on your desktop Windows users: right click and choose where to save the document on your desktop computer To read the PDF : If you don't have Acrobat Reader on your computer, go online to Adobe.com and download the *free* correct version for your computer. Once installed, you'll be able to read many documents which are provided as Portable Document Format (PDF), including manuals, brochures and instructions. Now there are only so many days - if you want to make things before Santa bursts out of the chimney, you'd better write a list and work out how many days to paint, wash, sew, etc etc etc ... hop to it! Do you of you do Halloween silk painting? All Hallowes Eve is on 31st October, Black and Orange theme, and I'm sure there are lots of great ideas you can find on the internet for silk painting ... See you next month, Colour Codes & Notebooks When trying to mix dyes to make colours, you might feel like you need a college degree to get it right! I must admit I am a bit haphazard about mixing colours, because the end result doesn't matter so much with what I'm painting. I've worked out how many teaspoons of powdered dye to mix for each colour I use regularly, and the key is to experiment. Once you've got it just *right*, you really should write down what you did to achieve it.I like visual reminders, so in my silk painting notebook I paint the color I achieved, then write beside it what I did to get there ... here's a look at my book: In the photo above you can see a piece of paper kitchen towel which I use to test the colours on before painting. I gather empty jars [Aussies: I use old Vegemite jars] to mix my paints in: Please remember to take safety precautions when mixing colours [wear a mask, gloves, cover surfaces with newspaper, spray gently with water so powder dye particles will stick to paper and not float around]. If you don't use powder dyes, still take care. Here is my record of the colours I mixed yesterday - notebook, paintbrushes, paper towel and paints: PS - you can buy these little notebooks all over the world in art stores, they're very inexpensive. I like the A6 size, the size of a sheet of paper folded in quarters. Blank pages, spiral binding so they will sit flat on a desk, nice thick pages so paint doesn't soak through. I also like to write the *timeframe* on one end, so when I put them in my bookcase I can easily see which one I'm looking for. Here is a closeup of what I wrote: |
Featured Artist #1 Helen Glidden : USA © 2005 Helen Glidden I first saw Helen Glidden's amazing cartoon-like drawings on silk in a silk book, and I was in awe of the detail and beautiful designs. Helen's website is worth having a look at, and I notice Helen also paints scarves for cancer patients and survivors, as do I. Please click here to visit her site if you have time. Featured Artist #2 Lynn Curtin : USA © 2005 Lynn Curtin Santa Cruz artist, Lynn Curtin, studied art at Cornell University, where she earned a B.S. degree in Biology, with a Fine Arts minor in 1978. She has traveled extensively and lived both in France and England. These experiences and her interest in nature mesh well with her current artistic endeavors. Silk painting recently captured her imagination and has been her principal medium since 1998. Check out her beautiful pillows! Featured Artist #3 Daniel Jean-Baptise : Caribbean © 2005 Daniel Jean-Baptiste I came across this amazing artist online a few years ago and I wrote to him. Daniel wrote back and I delight in his artwork, especially as I have lived in the tropics several times and also have a love of the beautiful abundance of colourful fish around coral reefs of the world. Daniel Gabriel Angelo Jean-Baptiste was born on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia , in 1963, to parents of Dutch Jewish and African Carib descent. Jean-Baptiste grew in the tiny fishing village of Choiseul . Spare time was spent fishing off the village's long wooden jetty, which gave Jean-Baptiste his first glimpses of the colorful creatures that inhabited the sea. The plants and the fish that intrigued the young boy would later dominate his art. Childhood days were sweet, as sweet as the perfumed breezes of St. Lucia . Jean-Baptiste began to paint at a young age. Soon the visitors to the island began to notice the little boy who had the gift of capturing the cobalt blue sea with his watercolors. It was through these early youthful escapes that the artist in Jean-Baptiste began to evolve. Please click here to visit Daniel's site, and don't forget to sign his guest book. This one and many others can be found in my collection, and I have put books on silk painting on this website, click here to check out the Books page [a new window will open as it is outside the Membership Area]. You can do an Amazon search for whichever country you are in. The Best of Silk Painting by Diane Tuckman & Jan Janas |

News from around the World I gather info on articles which appear anywhere online - sometimes I check them all out, sometimes I don't have time to. You will find the word *silk* in each of them, sometimes *silk painting* sometimes *handpainted silk*. Sometimes the article might not have anything to do with silk painting, but it might be interesting anyway - be adventurous! Some newspaper sites ask you to become a member - for free - in order to read their articles. The choice is yours. To find the word SILK in each webpage you go to, select EDIT / FIND from your top browser menu. P.S. Because many of these links are on newspaper websites, they may not remain active for too long - sometimes only a week or so.
