Merry Xmas!!! Happy Holidays!!! Merry Xmas!!! Happy Holidays!!!
Got a tip? Email me and I'll put it online with a credit to you.

Christmas carols ... gifts ... Yuletide ... holiday season ... too much food and drink ... catching up with loved ones, friends, associates ... sleighbells, Rudolph the Red ...

I'm sure you're all as flat out as a lizard drinking, busy with all the festivities to plan, projects to finish, shopping to be done ... you probably don't have time to read!

See you in the New Year,

PS - technology got the better of me!

I've been struggling with my computer for some time now - in the midst of trying to write newsletters, articles, update this Silkworm site ... and I am looking forward to taking a well-deserved break.

In the new year I hope to finish transferring this whole website to a new format [doing a few pages at a time at the moment] and fingers' crossed it all goes without a glitch.

I've been investigating software to *manage* the links on the links page, in an easier to use, easier to read format, and I'll be ever so pleased when it finally goes live.

Blogs are also something I've been investigating, and are a great way to announce info and snippets between newsletters - they can be set up so that others can post Comments, which can be a good and a bad thing, depending on what they choose to say, haha.

So apologies for delays in newsletters - I've been struggling to do way too many things I suspect, and sometimes the technology lets me down ... just when I need it!

I hope you are all free of techie issues!

USA :: Silk Painters' International
Santa Fe [New Mexico] :: July 2006

I attended the last Silk in Santa Fe Extravaganza in July 2004 - wow what a time we had!

Fantastic classes to attend, meeting people in the flesh I'd been emailing and phoning for a few years - it was such an extraordinary experience! I'd like to share something with you that I wrote when I got back to Australia:

The courtyard was filled with eagerly awaiting SPIN members and visitors, wondering what the silken delights would be for this Fashionista Lunch 2004, surrounded by desert in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Like the silkworm, this event has a definite gestation period - two years had passed since the last fashion parade.

As the crowd became quiet, a haunting melody was heard, and in strolled a barefoot man playing a flute, like the Pied Piper, who was about to be followed by beauties swathed in handpainted silk from around the globe. The Pied Piper was wearing an exquisite handpainted silk outfit (including a turban) which he had created himself, an exact replica of a centuries-old design.

Visions in extraordinary colours started to emerge, to pirouette their way through the tables and guests in time to the flute's lilting music, and oohs and ahhs were heard around the courtyard filled with guests who had been waiting with great anticipation for this event.

An extraordinary amount of talent was displayed in so many wearable art pieces, each one a masterpiece of its own; it was hard to believe this represented only a small percentage of the members who were seated in this courtyard, ablaze with the colours and textures of handpainted silk. The models kept coming, more and more designs on display, each one so different from the one before.

The SPIN members seated here created a stunning rainbow of their own, swathed in delightfully unique outfits, and each artist was touched by other silk artists who seemed to absorb the beauty of each piece by osmosis through the touch of a hand on silk ...

For me it was an overwhelming experience, to share these moments with other silk artists gathering in this one spot on the earth, to share the results of their silk painting, to come together to learn and teach, to marvel at the skill with which some artists had created these flowing floating beauties in all types of silken delights.

It was a feast for the eyes, the soul, the heart ... one which I will remember for a long long time to come.

I wrote about this group of artists in the UK last month, and I have now joind their ranks! I've become a Member, and I'm very excited to get to know them.

They have a terrific website - lots of free info and tips and techniques

Visit them here: SilkPainters-Guild.co.uk

You may have already visited all the pages in the Australian Silkworm site, but if not, here's an excerpt from the Techniques page about the Guild in the UK:

colour wheelM andy Southan of Silk Painters Guild UK, explains there is an alternative system to mixing darker colours using black.

It is often called the dual-primary system which has two blues; two reds and two yellows but definitely no black! Look on the workshops page for the article on colour mixing which is taken from my book 'Beginner's Guide' or, if you really want to go all out, get Michael Wilcox' comprehensive book 'Blue and Yellow don't make Green' which is also available from Search Press.

Mandy is world renowned as a silk artist and has written many books on the subject. To learn more about the colour wheel, read Mandy's article on the Silk Painters Guild UK website.

Creating a piece of art work that you can actually wear is great fun. I have always loved buying clothes that make a statement. Now I paint them, wear them and enjoy sharing them with you. The experience of wearing clothing that is a one-of-kind painting is hard to describe. You will never show up at a special event and see your dress on someone else. Even more importantly, you can select the item that expresses your individuality. If you don't find it, I'll create it especially for you.

I paint everything from scarves to wraps to blouses to mother-of-the-bride dresses and destination wedding gowns. You can choose from pieces already painted, bring me something to paint or we can work with your dressmaker or mine to design just the right piece for you. And if you have an empty spot on your wall, you can hang your beautiful work of art instead of hiding it in the closet. Just ask me, I'll show you how.
