Got a tip? Email me and I'll put it online with a credit to you.

A new year begins!

Ahhhhhhh the smell of a new year, new opportunities, a clean slate ... I always feel like I have an artist's palette in front of me, ready to go ... all I have to do is dab on the different colours to bring my new world to life! What does the new year mean to you??

I'd love to hear from you - snippets about anything!

As mentioned, I'm looking into the complete overhaul of this site, and am also investigating blogs ... have any of you used one with any success? Please let me know - the more info, the better prepared I'll be!

Ciao till next time,

Hand painted cotton by Teena Hughes

A course I recently attended

The catalogs arrive in the post, I glance over them, not really paying too much attention, but this one grabbed me ... it was just two streets away!

I've been painting on silk since 1980, and I've only ever attended one painting class since then ... [make that two ... now!].

The first class was a couple of years ago in Sydney, and I desperately wanted to know how to paint on cotton to turn it into clothing [like my silk clothing]. I attended the class, moved to the tropics, and a new range of Teena clothes was born!

Here's one of my first cotton TeenaTops at right ==>

[No, that's not me ... :o)]

Being in the tropics really brought home the fact that I needed to paint on cotton and linen, natural fabrics, as a way to survive in the oppressive humid *hot season*. I wore one of my cotton tops nearly every day I was there, and boy I loved them!

Above you will see another one of my cotton tops, they're great for dress up, or casual, over swimsuit or with little short pants for summer days.

Getting back to the thread ... so I saw a course advertised locally, and it was for something I'd always wanted to do - screen printing on fabric!

I know, I know, most people learn how to do this at school but we never were that lucky.

There were 8 adult students and we all had different reasons for learning, and what we hoped to be able to achieve at the end of the class. Although the teacher kept telling me I was to paint *only on cotton*, I'd bought silk scraps with me because this too was part of my goal. :o)

Here are some photos to show you how much fun I had, and how much I learnt :

First of all we had to cut stencils out of thick sheets of special silk screen plastic. I hadn't given any thought to what I'd want to create, so I was put on the spot - yikes! All I could think of was *apostrophes* [from my Humble Apostrophe site I'd been working on the night before]. After cutting out the stencil, we were ready to go!

You might see a hint of my apostrophe in this design:

silk screen yellow stencil - Teena's first go!

Above: We stretched our cotton lawn fabric by taping it to a large work table. My piece of material is about 12x48inches [30x122cms]. The original stencil is the size of a sheet of typing paper [A4 / Letter] - they can be larger or smaller.

After silk screening the design several times along the length of fabric, I then had to wash the screen and the stencil, and apply the second colour [below]:

Teena's second screen print colour

Wow!!! This is fun! All the mystery has been explained!!! Now I want to do lots more, haha!

Everyone had such different ideas and results, it was fabulous to be part of an art class - thoroughly inspiring and it was great to be in the collective creativity.

Silken Fish!

My next stencil was also very simple - I drew an outline of a fish, I made it up as I went, and had to learn how NOT to make mistakes on the stencil ... Here is my result which I did on SILK CHARMEUSE:

Teena's silk screened fish on silk

I really wanted to master cutting out the stencil, so my next [and last] design of the course was a simple shape - a koala, also on SILK CHARMEUSE. I could have created other stencils and filled in the designs with more colour, but I was happy just to do the outlines this time - here it is below:

Teena Hughes' koala on linen

I also screened my koala design onto two linen teatowels:

Koala linen teatowels

Some of the other students had grand plans for metres of fabric - here is an example below:

Silk Screen class with Teena Hughes

The paints used were PERMASET - a thick gloopy paint which can be handpainted onto tshirts, tablecloths etc, as well as being used for silk screening. If you're interested in investigating this as a new skill, most art stores will have plenty of information on the products required:

  • fabric - cotton, linen or silk
  • the wooden screen and mesh
  • plastic stencils
  • hard rubber squeegee to press color into fabric
  • Permaset paints or similar
  • large table covered in plastic, then an old blanket, then an old sheet stapled to the underside to keep it taut
  • plenty of ventilation and imagination!
You will be able to use silk screening to add depth to your silk paintings, to create designs [like the koala or fish] and then paint around them, or paint your silk first and silk screen after.

You might want a tiny intricate design on the edge of a silk shawl, scarf or piece of clothing or furnishing ... a silk screened design will make it so much easier than trying to do a gutta one!

Let your creativity run wild ... let me know your results if you have a go, I'd love to see them!
