UK Silk artist - Jilli Blackwood

Scottish textile designer - it takes a while for the page to load, but it's worth it, such a colourful display of sample pieces! Not really a silk artist, but I thought her use of colourful was delightful.

www.jilliblackwood.co.uk/fabrics.htm - cool website!

Are you painting silk or other sarongs?

Have you thought of providing instructions on how to wear and tie a sarong? If not, maybe you should - a one-page sheet with sketches and info is a great selling point and encourages people to TRY something new!

Here are some great sites on How to tie a Sarong:

Handouts for your booth

Shoppers love to collect flyers and bits of information to read when they stop for a cuppa, or when they get home.

It's always a great idea to have a handout which explains all the steps of silk painting, very clearly, perhaps some photos showing you starting with a white piece of silk.

The after-sale care of silk is always uppermost in the shopper's mind - how should they care for and handle the silk? Check out this link for "Creative Interiors: Home fabrics need special generally professional cleaning" and see if there is anything on this page which might be beneficial to share with your shoppers, as a handout.

Until next month! Send me anything of interest to the other silk artists in this group - I'd love some feedback! Do you like the news articles from around the world? Would you like more techniques? Is there something you'd like explained? Please email me and let me know ...

Exhibition : London

I read this recently in one of the lists I am on, and thought you might be interested too:

Just back from a vacation that included 5 days in London, where I had the opportunity to visit the V and A Museum [Victoria & Albert]. They have an ongoing exhibit that will be up at least until December entitled "Dress in Detail from around the World". Lectures and demos are also scheduled throughout that time frame.

The exhibit takes embellishment techniques, applique, for example, and has garment examples that show how different cultures use that in their costumes. Ditto for embroidery, fastenings, pleats, pockets, etc. The 218 page, full color catalog shows these garments and gives great instructions for the techniques. The photography is wonderful! The catalog is authored by Rosemary Crill, Jennifer Wearden and Verity Wilson, ISBN 1-85177-378-9. I am not sure if US booksellers can order it, but it would be available from the V and A's website, www.vam.ac.uk It was 19.95 British pounds (Nearly $40 US) but well worth it.

ONLINE SILK PENPALS : HAVE YOU MET YOURS YET?

I have recently had the amazing experience of meeting face-to-face with people I've been writing to online for ages, and it was wonderful! Do you have any experiences you'd like to share? I'll put them in upcoming Newsletters for us all to read ..

Upcoming silk painting classes

Don't forget to check out the classes listed on the Silk Painters' Guild's web site:

Recently read online ... which caused me to chuckle!

For those in the Boston area, I had donated an evening's workshop to an organization I like. They knocked the price down [to students] to $5! I am sure it will be fun. The newspaper asked me if there was a good way to cover the event in "Black and White" ... That question took me a moment ...

Kris Abshire is scheduled to teach two workshops at the annual Gibsons' Landing Fibre Arts Festival. ("Serendipity In A Cup: Color Essence for Hand Weavers" and "Arashi! Point of Departure")

From the sound of previous attendees, it's an event of great fun and learning in a quaint, charming setting, on the sunshine coast of British Columbia. Early bird discounted registration ends this week, I believe, so if you've considered going, now would be a good time to decide. If you need more information about my workshops, beyond the class description on the website, I'll be happy to oblige. Kris
