Art Aches Tax

Tax talk for Aussie artists

This month I was lucky to be able to attend a workshop to learn more about the Taxation Dept and the way it relates to artists - fulltime, part-time or hobby artist.

Art Aches & Money Matters was brought alive by Brian Tucker, ace accountant to creative people, organisations and businesses. Read more on the website (arttax.html page). www.briantuckercpa.org. Another article about Brian appears on the Arts Hub website - read this too www.artshub.com.au

National Museum of Women in the Arts : Washington, DC

Visiting Washington soon? Why not check out this great Museum - be prepared to spend plenty of time!

The National Museum of Women in the Arts, the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the work of women artists. Beside the permanent collection of paintings, you can catch (until May 16, 2004) their latest photography exhibit, Portraits of Women by Women which includes such well-known subjects as Mae West, Coco Chanel, and Diana Vreeland. Admission is $US5.00 but the first Sunday and Wednesday of each month are free. It is suggested you make time for afternoon tea surrounded by the fine art in their lovely Mezzanine Café. Great sightseeing! Their website is: http://www.nmwa.org

Nigerian scams - beware!

Has anyone else been targetted with this interesting new scam? I've had several lively email conversations with people from Nigeria, who want to "order large quantities immediately", but never tell you which item from the website.

Many artists have been fooled already, and shipped goods before the cheque/check has arrived or before it clears, only to be shocked to find out there is no money.

Be wary of people wanting to order extraordinay amounts of your work via your website ... if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Check out these websites:

I'm a silk artist - I got a request for 40 black silk jackets, haha - sound too good to be true? Yes! And why would I paint black? they could sew their own instead of shipping half way round the world ...

Looking for wholesale fabric in Canada?

Check out TrendTex, Contemporary, or Kendor [www.kendortextiles.com], show that you have some kind of a business, spend a minimum amount on your first order; you'll need to buy fabric by the bolt/roll - but it cuts the price of fabric in half. Another good source is Fabrictime Solutions on Pender St., Vancouver - Neil Baker is the owner. Call Canada 604-630-0822

A delicious website!

Check out this lovely site! http://www.fiberrevolution.com - I love the way the home page has images which gently roll over to become new images. The textile art and use of colour here is pure delight.
