October ...is the month of Halloween, 31st ... do you celebrate Halloween in your country? Will your silk painting thoughts turn to orange and black?How can it be so close to Christmas??? The weeks are zooming by and I must admit I have bought Christmas cards in a valiant attempt to get them out on time this year ... I also bought a few gifts for friends when I was in Santa Fe and Los Angeles in July, so that will help tremendously. I have friends coming to stay for a week over the Yuletide break, and I am really looking forward to it! What projects do you have planned for the next few months? Something fun you'd like to share with us? New ideas for scarves? cards? I have plans to make a few handpainted silk handbags from a new pattern I've boought - I'll decorate with a few beads or trinkets, and will probably give them away as gifts, as well as show them to local shops to see if I can display some for sale. Santa Fe : Florida : Trinity Beach!!!I had a lady come to my home for a one-on-one training course yesterday - all the way from Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA to Trinity Beach, Australia! We had a fabulous time, and it brought back all the great memories. For my student Jennifer, it was great to see her step outside her usual painting boundaries to create three beautifully colourful scarves in chiffon and habotai; my student felt she had learnt a lot just by seeing the way another silk artist prepares and stretches the silk, and the little tricks I use along the way, plus we spent time going over how to use a steamer, with a demo of my rocket-ship. We both had a great day, and seeing someone else paint has inspired me tremendously. I always rest my silk frame on 4 cans of catfood (so I don't get a sore back), but I thought I'd impress Jennifer by using tomatoes instead! :-> Lots of reading for yout this edition, and tips you might find useful. Quick Silk FrameNeed a frame in a hurry? Here are two options:1. Artist Stretcher BarsThese come in all sizes from about 6" long to 70" long, and can be pressed together at the corners to create fast frames. Easily dismantled by gently pressing one corner away from you, into a point.2. Dowel RodsA quick trip to the hardware store to buy some lengths of dowel and a roll of masking tape for this one - whatever length of frame you need, add about 6" to overall length, get 4 cut, and bind together at the corners with masking tape, at about 3" from the end of each dowel piece.Easy! My favourite silk?My preference for painting on silk [at the moment] is crinkle silk chiffon - this beautiful fabric is great for hot climates and easy travelling. It's light as a breeze and a delight to wear - almost feels like you're wearing nothing. Try it some time!
