September has been beautiful ...

... we've come through the heart of winter in Australia, but luckily for me in the tropical north, I am enjoying deliciously warm days with gentle breezes. I chose to live here because of the weather - no real winter to speak of, and plenty of inspiration for painting. What about where you live, what inspires YOU at this time of year?

SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO : continued ...

I've been there and back, and it was a fabulous time! I travelled for 2 weeks in the USA in July with a fellow silk artist (whom I'd met online in a silk painting forum), and we met up with a third Aussie at the Silk Painters International USA "Silk in Santa Fe Festival". WOW! It was piggy heaven, I've never ever been in the company of over 100 silk artists from around the world before! It was such a successful trip on so many levels, and it was so wonderful to talk and sleep and think silk 24 hrs a day ...

I was one of 8 teachers with 12 students in each 3-day class - we had FUN. I was in awe most of the time, meeting "names" I'd heard of over the years, people whose books I've read ... it was fantastic! [Did I say that already?] I could gush on for ages, but instead I'll give you a link to where my Silk Painting Workshop photos are:

New friendships were formed, old friendships nurtured, new techniques learnt, old faithfulls brushed up on ... a swirl, a kaleidoscope, a sea of handpainted silk .... ahhhhhhh, truly a great trip!

Teena!

Fantastic display props for your silk!

Faaabulous store in USA to buy supplies for markets, fairs etc, tabletop stands to drape scarves on, torso and bust, etc - a must see website!

I bought a couple of stands to put on tables, so that I can drape my scarves over them - and then put them in my suitcase to bring back to Australia - perfect!

Shibori Master

I recently attended the fabulous "With the flow, against the grain" exhibition of Shibori master Keiko Amenomori-Schmeisser (born in Japan, trained in Germany and living in Australia) - it opened up a whole new world for me in regard to the way I think about Shibori! It was also a technological breakthrough for me to see Keiko had printed her silk paintings onto large banners of sheer fabric, to create an incredible atmosphere in the Cairns Regional Gallery.

Her giant images of Shibori needles magnified beyond belief created patterns I didn't expect, her innovative use of Shibori excited and inspired me ... no traditional techniques for this Japanese artist who has made Australia her home. If you ever get the chance to see Keiko's work, please don't miss it!

Steaming tip

Please please please remember to set a TIMER when you are steaming silk - who needs to smell the distressing aroma of burnt paper and silk from a steamer gone dry??

Silk artist : Isabella Whitworth

I've become friends with a delightful English silk artist, Isabella Whitworth, who creates beautiful designs and teaches workshops.

A wealth of information can be found on her site - and she loves Resistad, the New Zealand water-based resist which disappears COMPLETELY when washed [I use it too!].

Google search tip

Do you use www.google.com?

Here's a tip to help you narrow down your searches ...

If you're searching for silk painting, type inverted commas around the two words to keep them together.

Instead of getting millions of pages which have both the word silk and painting on them somewhere, you'll get a shorter list with the phrase silk painting.
