Fall is arriving in many parts of the world - this is when leaves fall and temperatures get chilly. In parts of the U.S. and Canada it's heading into Spring and crocuses are peeking out from the snow .

Where I am at the top of Australia, it's become less humid and more bearable, and I must admit I don't really enjoy the 100% humidity for months on end. Now is the perfect time of year and I'm looking forward to enjoying winter with temps in the high 20 degree Celcius [high 80s in Farenheit], and dryer ... MUCH better!

Write and tell me about the climate where you are, share with us how the weather affects your painting, your products ... does your gutta gum up or get runnier? Let us know, we all love to read about silk and textile related issues.

Cheers, Teena!

Over the years I've tried all kinds of things as a gutta replacement, just for fun. Have you tried anything different? We'd love to hear about it ... Here are a list of things to consider:

  • Elmer's Glue [for north Americans] - there has been some discussion on this in a recent online mailing list. Leave to dry, fix, wash it out.
  • for Aussies, I have used UHU Glue sticks - the purple one so you can see it on the white silk, when it dries paint around it, washes out just fine
  • click this link to read a bit more about gutta on this website
  • to see photos of examples I've painted, check out this link - I used SALT as an antifuse
  • Rice paste [John Marshall is famous for his Japanese rice paste gutta - read more on this page]
  • flour and water
  • hairspray
If you click to go to this page you'll read more about some of these techniques.
The World Batik Conference is just nine weeks away!! It is attracting much interest and some great press lately. After three years of planning and eleven hour days, its happening!

Wonderful news came last week, in the form of a generous grant from The Japan Foundation to assist with publishing the "Rozome Masters of Japan" exhibition catalog. This is in addition to a fine grant from Friends of Fiber Art International. It will be a wonderful 80 page, full color catalog.

If you have not registered, please do so very quickly. This is NOT a biennial conference, and we do not expect it will be held in the USA again in the next ten years. There are STILL spaces in two great workshops ('Batik on Paper' and 'Design for Artists').

If you need hotels, contact Maryellen Malo in the USA at 1 800 272 3771. There are still a few rooms available on campus, but those will be filled this month. Request a room when you register. Download registration materials from www.massart.edu/batik and mail, fax or phone in. Or, use your brochure registration form.

If you are registered for the conference, please expect Arrival Information by email or post in mid-May. If you are staying at MassArt you should have received housing information already, with an April 30 deadline.

Thank you to those of you who have volunteered already. We still have need for some assistants, and gallery sitters. If you can help for a few hours, before, during or after the conference, we would be grateful.

This is a 'not to be missed ' event in the USA. The sessions, demonstrations, exhibitions, and networking opportunities will be superb.

Come join us in Boston.
